Hinchinbrook filly out of stakes winning mare Velasco - David Hayes and Tom Dabernig to train

Pictured above is a high class filly by Hinchinbrook out of the stakes winning Flying Spur mare Velasco which was Group 1 placed.  Velasco has had three to race for as many winners including the Stakes winner Devoirs.  This female line is heading in the right direction with Velasco being the dam of the Anabaa mare, Reve de Victoire.  Reve de Victoire is the dam of the Smart Missile filly I purchased at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale in January for Charlie Goggin and Leuella Meaburn to train.  I am thrilled to have more exposure to the family and regard this Hinchinbrook filly as one of the very best buys at the Premier Sale.

This pedigree has a number of well-bred young mares at the top of the page with Devoirs first foal Edge away being placed 2nd at her only two starts including one behind the highly touted Darley colt Inner Circle (Street Cry out of Camarilla).

Full details will be out next week.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO MAKE THE BONUS SCHEMES WORK FOR YOU

If you look at the top of any catalogue page you will see the Bonus Schemes that the yearling is either paid up for or eligible to join.  These schemes include BOBS, Super VOBIS, QTIS, SABIS, WESTSPEED and Tas Bonus.  When I attend a yearling sale I take little notice of which schemes the yearlings are eligible for.  My job is to identify the best yearlings that will be available for purchase within our budget.

Over the years our clients have done quite well from bonus payments from some of these schemes but none of these yearlings were purchased because they were attached to a ‘Bonus Scheme. They were purchased because they were nice horses.

When you attend the Melbourne Premier, Adelaide, Tasmanian and Perth Magic Millions Sales and any Queensland Sale a great number of buyers are only interested in purchasing horses that are eligible or paid up for Bonus Schemes in their particular state.  They only inspect yearlings that fit these criteria which quite often see yearlings not attached to the particular scheme slip through the cracks.

Good examples of us buying for ‘unders’ are Husson Eagle, Rumeron from the Adelaide Magic Millions, Invincible Me and Maldicion from the Perth Magic Millions and now this filly from the Inglis Premier.

It is amazing how people put the ‘blinkers’ on and fail to realise that it is about the horse they are purchasing not the scheme it is attached to.  For example the 2013 Inglis Premier Sale which was and still is the major sale to sell Super VOBIS yearlings resulted in 11 of the 26 stakes horses coming out of the sale being Super VOBIS qualified.  These figures were taken from bloodhound.net.au and correct as at 1 March 2015.

The average purchase price of these 11 Super VOBIS qualified yearlings through the sales ring was $144,090.  The average price of the 15 non Super Vobis qualified stakes horses was $80,033.

ON THE TRACK

We only have a couple of runners this week but they are important ones with Atalanta Miss lining up in the Adelaide Magic Millions on Monday and the Mode Stakes winner Savoureux resuming at Randwick on Wednesday.

We have had quite a few horses jump out or barrier trial in the past couple of weeks and these should start heading to the races.  These include some nice two year olds.

PEDIGREE UPDATES CONTINUE

Taiyoo continued on his way winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes and is now favourite for Monday’s Adelaide Cup.  He is a really exciting stayer and a ¾ sister to Amber’s Arion the dam of our I Am Invincible filly.

On Saturday Sweet and Speedy runs in the Australian Guineas at Flemington.  Make sure you have something on her.  She is an outstanding filly and is out of a ¾ sister to Molly Rocks, the dam of our two year old filly By Golly Molly.

Contributer(Ire) win in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm last Saturday did us no harm.  He is a close enough relation to Annaman and Shining Brooke to be on their pedigree page.  He might just be the best horse in Australia.

Unique’s ½ sister Danish Twist scored an amazing win at Wyong yesterday and the other ½ brother Happy Trails is the one to beat in the Australian Cup next Saturday.  He loves the 2000m trip at Flemington.

I was pleased to see Unabated’s three year old filly Supara run 2nd to First Seal in the Group 2 Surround Stakes, also at Warwick Farm.

These results really help our fillies as the better the page looks up the top the more chance we have of getting a good result when the time comes to move on our fillies at the end of their racing careers or when we keep them to breed from.

ADELAIDE MAGIC MILLIONS

I am heading to Adelaide to start inspections for the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale which starts on Monday night and finishes on Wednesday.  This sale is likely to be the final one I will purchase yearlings from this year.  I am keen to purchase Patrick Payne another yearling.  He has done a sterling job for us with Husson Eagle and Atalanta Miss being the two yearlings I have purchased him in the past.

Adelaide has been a happy hunting ground for us over the years with Unique, Horrocks, Sun Glazed, Garner, Husson Eagle, Rumeron and Atalanta Miss being some of the good gallopers I have purchased from the sale.

I also purchased Pitt Street from Lindsay Park at Angaston as a weanling so our association with South Australian breeding has been very strong.

Speaking of Husson Eagle, he is set to resume at Caulfield on Easter Saturday over 1000m.  He has been gelded and is going along nicely.

YEARLINGS

This week I will highlight the Hinchinbrook filly out of Maritess and Tough Speed colt out of Vickers.  These two nice yearlings are going to John Moloney and Charlie Goggin and Leuella Meaburn.

Tough Speed colt out of Vickers 2013 - 10 shares @ $5,790 per share (5% shares for $2,895)

The colt

When I attended the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale this year I was taken by this colt.  I had inspected the high profile colts in the sale but was more impressed by this fellow than any of the other ones on offer.

He has a beautiful easy walk and gets around very well.  He is a beautifully relaxed horse and our vet Tim Roberts was also very impressed with him.  I don’t purchase too many colts but was determined to get this fellow.  To put it simply he oozed class and is out of a very good Flying Spur mare by a stallion that can get a very good horse.

I expect this colt to run at two and have paid him up for the Tasmanian Magic Millions but really expect him to excel as a three year old and beyond where his best distances should be at 1600m.

The colt will be a great addition to our team of horses trained by Charlie Goggin and Leuella Meaburn at Runnymede Stud in Tasmania.

Tough Speed

Tough Speed has stood at Armidale Stud in Tasmania for nine seasons serving relatively small books of mares.  In the main this was due to the Tasmanian economy and the uncertainty surrounding the state of the thoroughbred Industry.  It is interesting to note in the 2013 breeding season he served his biggest book of mares.

In any case his results have been very good with his best being the Stakes winners Black’n’Tough, Banca Mo, Lyell and Tough Chick as well as the stakes placed Settler’s Joy, Speedy Sky and Jay Bee’s Gee Gee.

When assessing a stallion I like to look at the number of stakes winners to winners a horse has.  Very few have a 10% or greater conversion rate.  Tough Speed has a 6% conversion rate which is very good considering the quality of mares he served.

Many of his progeny go on to win multiple races with 79% of his winners being metropolitan winners.

Australia’s leading sire Fastnet Rock has 66% winners to runners compared with Tough Speed’s 56% which gives you an idea of his effectiveness.

In my opinion Vickers is one of the highest quality mares to go to Tough Speed.

Vickers

Vickers is by the Champion broodmare sire Flying Spur who is currently 4th on the Australian Broodmare List.  Vickers was a very good race mare winning metropolitan races at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown.  She ran a terrific 5th in the Group 3 Tranquil Star Stakes.  Unfortunately she had a race fall and this ended her racing career.

Vickers comes from one of the best families in Tasmania being out of the stakes winning mare Eascapada.  The 3rd dam is Knightly Belle a high class Sydney two year old and dam of the stakes winners Poacher’s Star, The Old China and of course Escapada.

As a broodmare Vickers has done a very good job with four of her six foals winning on for mainland.  I purchased the first foal out of the mare for $70,000 but unfortunately she had to be put down after a paddock accident.

It should be noted she missed getting into foal in the season before she had this colt.  The odds of a mare getting a stakes horse increase after missing a year and a good mare like Vickers is entitled to get a very good horse.  Hopefully it is this colt.

Hinchinbrook filly out of Maritess 2013

The filly

This filly is at the breakers and I am receiving very good reports about her progress.

This filly is a strong well balanced athlete that gets around well and has a nice presence to her.  She is very strong behind and through the hocks.  She has a deep girth and looks like she may go early as her dam did.

She vetted out without any issues and was reared at Milburn Creek one of the NSW’s most well respected boutique nurseries.

The filly is a September foal and I have decided to pay her up for the rich Adelaide Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic.

Hinchinbrook

Top class juvenile winning the Group III AJC Skyline Stakes and Listed Canonbury Stakes before being the first colt home when fourth to Crystal Lily in the Group I STC Golden Slipper and was then third in the Group I AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

Trained on at three for Group I placings in the AJC All Aged Stakes, MRC Oakleigh Plate and MVRC William Reid Stakes, before being injured in the UK while preparing for Royal Ascot and retiring with earnings in excess of $590,000.

Three-quarter brother to leading young sire Snitzel and Group III winner Viennese by champion sire Fastnet Rock from stakes-winning sprinter Snippets’ Lass.

Maritess

Maritess was a fast Magic Albert stakes placed winner of two, two year old races.

Maritess is a ½ sister to the Group 3 and multiple stakes winner Come Fly With Me.  Maritess has had three foals to race for two winners.  The 3rd dam is the outstanding Group 1 wining mare Dinky Flyer.

It is only early days for Magic Albert as a broodmare sire but he is having good success crossing with Danehill line mares.
