Jacquinot Bay makes it three wins in a row

Saturday 7 February 2015, 2:48pm

Honest gelding Jacquinot Bay has extended a summer winning streak to three by the barest of margins at Sandown.

In the process, the seven-year-old has also likely earned a return to stakes racing later this month.

Jacquinot Bay was sent out the $2 favourite in Saturday's Master Yearlings Summer Championship Final (1600m) but was forced to dig deep and fend off Aragonese who issued a strong challenge in the home straight.

With 6kg more than most of his rivals, including the eventual runner-up, Jacquinot Bay responded under jockey Michael Walker to hold off Argonese by a nose with Mister Milton third.

The victory added to Jacquinot Bay's summer wins in the Listed Lord Stakes and an open-class victory at Flemington.

"He's probably just getting too much weight in these sorts of races now so he might go up in class to a Group race next," co-trainer David Hayes said.

"An option is the (Listed) Kilmore Cup or he might run in the Group Two Peter Young Stakes over 1800 metres.

"The Peter Young Stakes will be a small field against a couple of good horses but he'll have fitness on his side and he's very courageous."

One of the "good horses" scheduled to run in the Peter Young Stakes is Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist.

Hayes said Jacquinot Bay might have been expected to win easier but said he showed plenty of fight to respond when challenged.

"He's got a great will to win," Hayes said.
