Lilli needs to nail the start: Payne

Friday 6 February 2015, 12:57pm

David Payne has Group One ambitious for Lilliburlero this autumn but just where her campaign finishes could depend on her start.

The trainer believes the Group Three winner is capable of reaching loftier heights but to do so must overcome her habit of dawdling out of the barriers.

"She's a filly that costs herself races," Payne said.

"She always seems to be a bit slow out and then strikes interference."

Lilliburlero will kick off her latest campaign against a classy field in the Group Two Breeders Classic at Rosehill on Saturday.

Last year's winner Catkins returns to defend her title and holds sway in betting over the up-and-coming Mihiri with talented pair Neena Rock and Marianne also at single-figure odds.

Lilliburlero is a $15 chance to take her first-up record to three wins from five attempts and Payne says the burly mare has done enough groundwork to be competitive.

Longer-term he has his sights on the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on March 14.

"She's pretty forward I think. She's a big mare so you can never tell but she's done plenty of work," he said.

"I'd like to go to the Coolmore later on, that's her aim if all goes well."

Lilliburlero heads a squad of six for Payne at Rosehill where he will also be represented by Bold Circle in the Group Three Eskimo Prince Stakes.
