Allknight Saint on trial for Scone Cup

Friday 6 February 2015, 12:14pm

Improving gelding Allknight Saint is on trial for the Scone Cup when he takes on open company at Doomben.

Allknight Saint showed his ability when he ran just outside the course record to win at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago.

Trainer Brad Herne has always had a big opinion of Allknight Saint but so has the handicapper.

Herne ran the gelding out of his class when he won at the Sunshine Coast in a bid to get down in the weights.

"He kept getting big weights in his own class. So we ran him in a Benchmark 90 where he got the minimum," Herne said.

"I would like to take him down for the Scone Cup in May. But he might also be a chance in winter carnival races such as the Tattersalls Mile."

Allknight Saint had won the provincial championship race two starts back over 1350 metres and had no trouble stepping up to 1600.

However, the handicapper was also impressed with the Sunshine Coast win and gave Allknight Saint 57.5kg in the Jim Beam Open (1600m) on Saturday.

"He does appear badly in at the weights when compared with a few of the other open company horses. He has gone up three-and-half kilos for winning a restricted class race," Herne said.

Despite that, the trainer has decided to stick with senior rider Ric McMahon rather than book a claiming apprentice."
