MICK PRICE VIDEO/INTERVIEW (featuring RICHARD HAYNES/MICK PRICE)-click to view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2ELl8piycM&t=2s

The More Than Ready colt from Purespeed, who would race as SEBRING, was bred by George Altomonte at his Corumbene Stud in NSW and caught the eye of the good judges from the Gai Waterhouse stable when he was inspected at the Magic Millions in 2007. This prompted Denise Martin, whose Star Thoroughbreds syndication company horses were all trained by Waterhouse at that time (they are now with Chris Waller), to make an offer for the colt when he was passed in at $130,000.

Named SEBRING after a US car racing circuit, the colt had his first start for his over 1100m at Rosehill on January 19, 2008, scoring a good win from Over The Wicket and Siderus on a slow track. Stepped up in class a month later in the Listed Canonbury Stakes (1000m) at headquarters, he demolished the opposition, beating runner-up Hoi Ming Treasure by 4.5 lengths and running 58.15 on a dead track.

With the racing program rearranged because of the devastating outbreak of equine influenza, SEBRING next contested the postponed Breeders’ Plate-LR (1100m) at Randwick on March 1 and retained his unbeaten record, beating Dubai to Sydney and Bid Spotter and running 1:04.98 on a dead track. Gai Waterhouse elected not to give SEBRING another run before the Slipper on April 19, but the colt thrived on this unorthodox preparation and looked in magnificent order on Slipper day where his army of fans were easily identified wearing Star’s distinctive purple and white livery.

There was a collective groan when the colt fluffed the start and jockey Glen Boss elected to save ground along the rail. “He walked out,” said Boss, who had been called in from Hong Kong after the suspension of SEBRING’S regular rider Blake Shinn, “but it didn’t concern me much, he just lost his footing and dropped off. SEBRING kept his composure really well, on the turn he was ready to explode and he just surged through the field. He’s a special horse and when he gets over more distance, he’ll get better and better.”

SEBRING won the Slipper by a half-head from Von Costa de Hero (Encosta de Lago), who charged home late out wide after striking interference at the top of the straight. Third, another 1.75 lengths away, was the filly Portillo (Red Ransom (USA)), the 1200m run in 1.12.88 on the heavy track. Waterhouse was full of praise for the unbeaten colt, her third Slipper winner: “He made up ground so brilliantly and just exploded up the straight. I don’t think I’ve been so excited watching a race in years. This stamps him as Australia’s leading two year-old. This is a really, really good horse

There was no break for SEBRING as he lined up for the AJC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 (1400m) on April 26. SEBRING jumped first on this occasion for regular rider Shinn and settled behind the leader before hitting the lead a long way from home and leaving Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice) and Love and Kisses (Encosta de Lago) to chase him for the minor placings.
The margins were a length and a head, and the time 1:25.99 on a heavy track.

“He was just so brave. He won the Slipper by coming from behind them and today he did it hard out on the speed and was able to fight them all off. He’s a great horse,” Waterhouse said. “The great thing about SEBRING is that he is so relaxed, nothing fazes him. For a colt, it’s the best asset he could have and usually it’s only the very good ones have that attitude.” Shinn described SEBRING as “a terrific horse, a champion two year-old with a great constitution.”

SEBRING’S next start would result in his first loss, but the colt showed great heart in his short-head second to star filly Samantha Miss in the AJC Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 (1600m) on May 3, again on a rain-affected (dead) track (1:38.28). He was sent for a break as the winner of five of his six starts and $2,537,060 and not long afterwards it was announced that Australia’s Champion Two Year-Old would become the fifth Golden Slipper winner to stand at Widden, following a deal with the stud that valued the colt at $30m.

“He is the most sought after stallion prospect to emerge in a very long time and we are thrilled that his owners have chosen Widden as the farm to give their horse the best possible home and opportunity of succeeding at stud,” Widden’s Antony Thompson said. “SEBRING will be the fifth winner of Australia’s sire-making race, the Golden Slipper, to stand at Widden, following in the illustrious footsteps of Todman, Vain and Marscay, all champion sires in their own right, as well as the 2005 winner Stratum.”

At the time of this announcement SEBRING’S retirement was not contemplated before the start of the 2009 breeding season and the colt resumed work with Gai Waterhouse late in 2008. However an announcement was made on January 28 that the horse was injured and would be retired. He won five of six starts and was second in the other and earned $2.537m being rated Champion Two Year-Old Colt in Australia in 2007-08.

SEBRING’S sire More Than Ready, who shuttles to Vinery, Scone, began stud duties in the US and Australia in 2001 and has been a Champion Sire of Two Year-Olds in the US (2010) and Australia (2007-08, 08-09). He has sired 1842 winners and 198 Stakes winners in Australia led by champion mare More Joyous (Sunday Silence, 3mx3m Halo) with 21 wins and earnings of $4.4m including eight Gr.1 successes.

At stud SEBRING has been an outstanding success and whilst himself passed away in February 2019 his progeny are still extremely well sought after at the sales. In a glittering stud career SEBRING has sired to date an ever increasing 542 winners and 56 Stakes Winners that include the calibre of CRITERION, DISSIDENT, EGG TART, AMPHITRITE, LUCKY BUBBLES, RINGERDINGDING, SESAR, SEDANZER, SEABURGE, BELIEVE YOURSELF, BRING ME THE MAID, CLIFTON RED, KISS A ROSE, SCRATCHY BOTTOM, THURLOW etc AND part of the bonus associated with this filly is that SEBRING is well known for producing Stakes winning fillies.

The fillies pedigree is one of those pedigrees that is filled with winners coming from every dam and includes multiple Black type success right across the board including such horses as: LONE ROCK-Winner of SAJC Goodwood Hcp GROUP 1, VRC Bobbie Lewis Hcp GROUP 3 and MVRC Champaign Stakes GROUP 3, RAIN AFFAIR- Winner of $1,555,300 including the ATC Expressway Stakes GROUP 2, Apollo Stakes GROUP 2, Challenge Stakes GROUP 2 Missile Stakes GROUP 3 (twice), BEEN THERE- Winner STC Silver Slipper Stakes GROUP 2, WICKED SMILE- Winner SAJC Swettenham Stud Stakes GROUP 3, CENTAINE- Winner VATC Autumn Stakes GROUP 3, GALAPAGOS GIRL- Winner VRC Frances Tressady Stakes GROUP 3 and MRC Mannerism Stakes GROUP 3 AND it also includes one of the most respected dam lines in the stud book via PROCRASTINATE, herself a GROUP 3 VATC Tristarc Stakes winner and is also responsible for such horses as LAISSERFAIRE- Champion Older Female Sprinter in South Africa and Winner of the GROUP 1 Kenilworth Cape Flying Championship (twice), Newmarket Computaform Sprint Stakes GROUP 1 AND Scottsville South African Fillies Sprint Stakes GROUP 1 but to name a few, A TIME FOR JULIA-Winner ATC Wenona Girl Hcp GROUP 3, CENTENNIAL PARK- Winner STC Expressway Stakes GROUP 2, BALLACK- Winner QLD Tatt’s RC Tattersall’s Cup GROUP 3 and Stakes winners FOREPLAY- Winner MRC JRA Doveton Stakes (LISTED), TIME THIEF- Winner MRC Zeditive Stakes (LISTED) and PERSONIFY- Winner SAJC Queen Adelaide Stakes (LISTED).
