Timing is Everything!

Take our recent Almanzor filly, purchased at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sales. With Australians’ insatiable appetite for fast 2YOs, sale prices were going through the roof. But that’s where things can work to your advantage if you know when and how to go against the grain.

Because sometimes it’s not about winning bidding wars over fast 2YO’s, but rather, understanding those horses that are flying under the radar and knowing the types of races they’ll be perfect for.

Races like the 3YO Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks. It's about knowing when to make your move.

So when Lot 368, a Almanzor filly, came through, our ears pricked up. Almanzor is in his third season as a sire. He has 2YO's on the ground at the moment, and despite his own 3 wins as a 2YO, he is not expected to get 2YO winners. His 3 Group 1's all came as a 3YO and his pedigree suggests his progeny will also excel as 3YO's.

This meant Almanzor’s later-developing progeny could slip under the radar of everyone focussed on fast 2YOs and allow us to do what we do best, which is buy value. But unfortunately, someone else had also taken notice of this filly, a certain Chris Waller, Australia’s leading Group 1 trainer (who claimed 4 Cox Plates with Winx amongst other things). Infact, the day before he had purchased a Almanzor colt for $440K.

As luck would have it, however, our bloodstock agent John Foote knew this filly’s family well. He had actually bought the mother, Phenetic, for the Lindsey family at Cambridge Stud 4 years prior. They were specifically targeting international blood to go to their flagship stallion, Almanzor, and Phenetic was the perfect choice.

She was a big robust mare by leading broodmare sire, Zamindar. She was a winner at her only start and had already produced a multiple winner in NZ.

Her grand dam, Starfan, finished fourth in a Group 1 and was stakes placed in France. Her third dam has thrown Group 1 winner Etoile Montante and multiple group winners.

So when we unexpectantly found ourselves in a bidding war with Chris Waller’s bloodstock agent, Guy Mulcaster, and seemed to reach our limit at the same time he did, it was John’s knowledge that gave us the confidence to go one more, and pip them at the post.

And sometimes in life, timing is everything, because two things happened after we purchased this filly. Magic Millions announced their MM Raceday Prizemoney expansion to $11.75 million, which will now include a 1200m syndicate race for 3YOs and above.

o On Saturday, January 14, 2023, the meeting will expand to a 10-race card through the addition of two new races: Magic Millions The Syndicate (1200m, 3YOs & up) and Magic Millions The Debut (900m, 2YO).
o “As part of the expansion, the Magic Millions The Syndicate will be run for $1 million for horses aged three-year-olds and up, creating the world’s largest ownership experience in the process.
o To secure a start, horses must be owned by a minimum of 20 individual registered owners and/or syndicate members from its first race through to the running of The Syndicate.”

A new $1 million race for syndicated 3YOs and above! It's just when we think she'll hit her stride, we couldn’t think of a better contender. We have had amazing success with Mahuta, Krone and He'll Haunt Us all winning on the big raceday and would love to add one more.

The second thing that happened after we bought this filly is that the Karaka Millions was run in New Zealand a week later. It is their premier 2YO event run over 1200m, and guess who sired their first Australasian 2YO stakes winner?!

You guessed it, Almanzor with Dynastic winning at just his second start. Almanzor who has only had 3 runners to the track thus far, has already had a (2YO) stakes winner, a stakes placed, and a placed runner. Which means all those people looking for fast 2YOs just took notice, and the price of Almanzor progeny just went up.

All before they’ve even hit their 3YO stride.

Our filly is now having a break now at Washpool Stud in Queensland where she will be given the time she needs. She will be educated in 8 weeks and will stay on in Queensland through the early winter. She will also be pre-trained up there and return to Melbourne in August.

We have engaged the services of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr to train her and she will get every chance to be aimed at the Thousand Guineas, the VRC Oaks, and of course the new MM syndicate race in 2023.

This filly’s pedigree page ensures she will always have a future at stud, and if she wins any black type she will be a very valuable broodmare.

Don’t be one of those people that just wishes you’d bought in when you had the chance.

Timing is everything.

You literally won’t be able to buy Almanzor progeny at this price
