Soros primed to debut for Schweida stable

Thursday 20 November 2014, 11:55am

Regally bred gelding Soros has arrived in Brisbane on a mission to add black type to the record of his dam, the champion mare Bonanova.

Soros will be having his first start for in-form trainer Kelly Schweida when he tackles the Listed Keith Noud Handicap (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Now a six-year-old, Soros was trained by Peter Moody when last in Brisbane where he ran fourth in the Group Three Grand Prix Stakes.

Soros was installed second favourite for the 2012 Queensland Derby after the Grand Prix run but was injured and missed the race which was won by his stablemate Brambles.

He has since won four races in Sydney and Melbourne but Moody and his owners, the Hutchins Thoroughbreds venture, believe he will be better suited in Brisbane.

Horses don't come much better bred than Soros who is by champion sire Lohnro.

Among Bonanova's wins were the Group One Emirates Stakes and Tatts Winter Stakes, now known as the Group One Tatts Tiara.

Soros is a half-brother to the black-type winners Prima Nova and Bonaichi as well as two other winners.

Schweida said Soros would be aimed at the Brisbane summer feature races such as the Brisbane Handicap and Bernborough Handicap.

"But he is a very good fresh horse having won three times and being placed twice first-up. So don't be shocked if he runs a bit of a race," Schweida said.

Trainer Robert Heathcote hopes Excellantes can improve on his first-up record as he returns after a four months absence from the racetrack.

Veteran Excellantes has had eight first-up starts without winning but he has been minor placed four times.

"They scrapped his comeback race two weeks ago and I didn't start him at Caloundra last Friday in an open because he got too much weight," Heathcote said.

"But he will have to run Saturday to ready him for the Group Three George Moore Stakes in a fortnight."
