Buffering recovers from Manikato buffeting

Saturday 1 November 2014, 4:50pm

Trainer Robert Heathcote had good news in two states with his star Buffering recovering from an injury scare and his three-year-old Punta Notre making a great city debut at Doomben.

Buffering worked strongly in Melbourne on Saturday morning and is back in the frame for the Group One Darley Classic at Flemington next Saturday.

"My fellow Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan watched him work for me and said Buffering worked very well. I will fly to Melbourne on Monday night to monitor him," Heathcote said.

"But at this stage I am confident he will at his best in the Darley."

Heathcote declared Punta Notre ($2.60) a possible ATC Derby horse in the autumn after he won the Wareco Hcp (1600m).

"He is big and silly and still lacking maturity. He has his crown jewels and is aware of them."

"I was thinking about going to Sydney with him just for the experience of the trip but the ATC Derby is a real option.

Winning jockey Tim Bell summed up Notre Punt with one word: "Green."

Heathcote got a double with Vaz De Torres ($5) after jockey Jim Byrne had vowed to make up for an unlucky previous start defeat.

Vaz De Torres stood in the barriers at his previous start but ran on well for third.

In Saturday's Atikenvale Family Health Centre Class 6 (1600m) Vaz De Torres jumped with the field and had a lovely run before coming away to score easily.

"They wanted to ease up in the middle stages but then they clamped on the pace and that suited him," Byrne said.

Meanwhile, vastly improved galloper Flying Riddle ($3.40) could have earned himself a start in Group Three company when he resumed with an impressive win in the T L Cock Electrical hcp (1050m).

Stable foreman Graeme Green said Flying Riddle would start in a similar race in a fortnight and then could get out to 1200m in the Group Three George Moore Stakes in December.

"He got back further than we thought he would but to come from last and then strike trouble in the straight it was a very good win," Green said.
