Kermadec win settles the nerves for Waller

Saturday 1 November 2014, 12:34pm

A nervous Chris Waller could not have asked for a better start to the Melbourne Cup carnival when Kermadec took out the Carbine Club Stakes.

Kermadec ($6), ridden by Blake Shinn, scored a half-length victory over Stratum Star ($6) with Manhattan Avenue ($15) 2-1/4 lengths away third.

Waller admitted to being jittery on his way to Flemington on Saturday but Kermadec's win helped ease his anxiety over what might unfold for his stable at the Victoria Derby day meeting.

"You do feel the nerves," Waller said.

"We've got a big team and got a lot of chances, but with that you've got to perform."

Waller said Kermadec would head for a spell and be brought back for an autumn campaign that could include the Australian Guineas at Flemington in March.

"He's got a nice, flowing action and only good horses have that," Waller said.

"He's now a winner at Flemington and that opens up options including the Australian Guineas, but realistically the Randwick Guineas and the Rosehill Guineas look good races in Sydney."

Shinn, booked to ride the Waller-trained Junoob in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup, he will miss Australia's greatest race because of a suspension.

But he was thrilled to receive an opportunity on an exciting horse like Kermadec.

"He's got a beautiful action and he just glides over the turf," Shinn said.

"I think he'll get even further with experience and has got a bright future."
