Lucky win for Wolfgram at Ipswich

Wednesday 29 October 2014, 3:22pm

Apprentice Travis Wolfgram heeded the advice of trainer Matthew Dunn to guide short-priced favourite Lucky Lucre to victory at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Wolfgram has been one of Brisbane's form riders in recent weeks but he was caught out when second on Lucky Lucre at the gelding's previous start at Ipswich three weeks ago.

It was a small field and Lucky Lucre got well back in a slowly run race before charging home late.

Dunn, who is Wolfgram's master, told him not to get too far out of his ground when he faced another small field in Wednesday's Sky Racing World Handicap (1690m).

Wolfrgram followed instructions to the letter and when Jim Byrne on Tartan Warrior attacked the leaders from the 900m he kept Lucky Lucre within striking distance.

In the straight, Lucky Lucre ($1.60 favourite) came away to win by two lengths from Kurrajong Dragon ($4.60).

Stable representative Keira Dunn said the winner was unlucky at his previous start and confirmed Wednesday's plan was to be closer in the run.

"It worked out today and he is a horse who can finish strongly," she said.

Lucky Lucre has now won four of his 11 starts and the Dunn stable hopes he will get further than 1600m.
