Valley stewards suspend Payne and Rawiller

Saturday 25 October 2014, 8:39pm

Jockey Michelle Payne will appeal a 20-meeting suspension for her winning ride on Prince Of Penzance in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.

Payne was found guilty of careless riding near the 400m which caused Chad Schofield to be dislodged from Albonetti.

Stewards said Payne allowed Prince Of Penzance to improve into a tight run between Black Tycoon and Precedence, causing Albonetti to clip heels.

Stewards assessed the careless riding to be in the high range and she was banned from midnight on Sunday and can resume riding on November 14.

Payne, who indicated she will appeal the suspension, was also handed a 10-meeting suspension on a careless riding charge following her ride on Akavoroun in the Crystal Mile.

Stewards charged her for allowing Akavoroun to shift out at the 350m, causing interference to Atlante.

Payne indicated she would not appeal that suspension.

Hong Kong-based Nash Rawiller was suspended for 14 meetings after pleading not guilty to a careless riding charge.

Stewards charged Rawiller with causing interference to Criterion, ridden by James Macdonald, passing the post on the first occasion in the Cox Plate.

Rawiller was riding on a stay of proceedings following a Hong Kong suspension.

His latest ban starts at midnight on November 9 and he can return to riding on November 22.
