Suspension rules Shinn out of Melb Cup

Saturday 25 October 2014, 6:36pm

A shattered Blake Shinn will miss the ride on Junoob in the Melbourne Cup after he was suspended for careless riding at Rosehill on Saturday.

The six-meeting penalty came just three days after he succeeded in having a separate careless riding charge overturned by stewards at Randwick after mounting a passionate defence.

"It's hard to cop," Shinn said.

"I feel like I've let down a lot of people who have supported me with rides in the next few weeks."

The top jockey will ride at Saturday's Victoria Derby day meeting at Flemington where his mounts include Kuro in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes.

But he will miss the remaining three days of the Melbourne Cup carnival including the Crown Oaks and Emirates Stakes meetings.

Shinn fell foul of stewards for his effort on Atmospherical in the Canterbury Leagues Club Handicap when he shouldered rival Fort Sumter out of the way near the 300m.

It was a winning move but a costly one.

Chief steward Ray Murrihy had sympathy for Shinn's position but it was overridden by the need for safety.

"You are missing a very significant race on the Australian calendar," Murrihy said.

"We're aware it's not a good time....but we've got to consider rider safety as paramount."

Shinn pleaded guilty to the charge and can return to the saddle on November 15.
