Tawteen leads throughout in Crockett

Friday 24 October 2014, 9:46pm

The absence of quality fillies Eloping and Earthquake has paved the way to victory for Tawteen at Moonee Valley.

The David Hayes-trained filly had chased those two fillies home at Moonee Valley and Caulfield repsectively at her two previous outings.

With Stephen Baster aboard, the $2.50 equal favourite scored a 3-1/2 length win over More Radiant ($2.50) with London Lolly ($7) a half-neck away third in the Crockett Stakes over 1200m.

Trainer David Hayes said the victory was an all important "black type" success for owner Sheikh Hamdan.

"The Sheikh wanted some black type for her," Hayes said.

"We've got that now and we can look further ahead now."

Hayes said Tawteen would now head to Flemington during Melbourne Cup week for either the Group Three Red Roses Stakes over 1100m at Flemington on Oaks Day or the Listed Springtime Stakes over 1400m on Final Day.

"I've always thought 1400 metres will suit her and I would like to give her a try," said Hayes.

"She'll either run in the Red Roses or there's a 1400 metre race that will suit her during Flemington week."

Baster has developed a strong affinity with Tawteen, guiding her to four wins and a second, from five rides on the filly.

"She's been a good filly for me and the only time I've been beaten on her was by Earthquake who's not a bad type," Baster said.
