Words of wisdom inspire Grayson Square run

Friday 24 October 2014, 11:34am

Some sound advice from his late father is proving a winning formula for trainer Brian Wakefield and his exciting galloper Grayson Square.

Grayson Square will be aiming to make it three wins in a row when he tackles the Tox Free Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Brian Wakefield snr was regarded as one of Brisbane's best "money riders" in the 1950s to 1970s before becoming a top trainer.

He rarely had a big team in work but was able to win a lot races by astutely placing his horses.

His son has followed the same career path and training philosophy, ensuring Grayson Square has been raced to advantage.

"Dad always emphasised how important it was to place your horses correctly and let them win through their grades," he said.

"His horse Roman Senator won 26 races. The reason was he won races in every possible grade from maiden to feature races with him.

"I can't get his advice out of my head when plotting what to do with Grayson Square."

Wakefield had been tempted to run Grayson Square in open company earlier in his career but has kept him to suitable races where he can use an apprentice's claim.

"I really want to get this horse up to 1600 metres and we will see where we can go from Saturday," Wakefield said.

Grayson Square showed his potential from his first start when he won at 30-1 beating the top filly Doubtfilly.

The gelding is raced by members of the Bellas and McElrae families who have been long-term owners of the Wakefield stable.

"They have been very good clients over the years and that is why I have been keen to win as many races as I can when they get a good horse," Wakefield said.
