Schweida gives Orman vote of confidence

Country apprentice James Orman's improved form has earned him the mounts on three key runners for the powerful Kelly Schweida stable at Doomben on Saturday.

Orman has been booked to ride the Schweida-trained trio of Discreet in the Iveco Handicap, Miss Cover Girl in the Nugrow Handicap and What About Me in the Tox Free Handicap.

The Gatton-based apprentice, who won on What About Me at Doomben last Saturday, has ridden 78 winners in just over a year including five in the metropolitan area since the start of the season.

"I have been watching James ride for a while and he is maturing with each week," Schweida said.

"The fact a few of the other apprentices have lost their three kilo claim recently is a boost for him.

"He deserves a go on some good mounts and I am happy to be with him."

Orman replaces Cassie Schmidt on Discreet and Miss Cover Girl who both made impressive returns to racing two weeks ago.

Miss Cover Girl turned in an eye-catching performance first-up when she was slow to jump and finished strongly for third over 1110m.

"A couple of the clock watchers said she probably ran around 33 seconds for her final 600m which is really getting along," Schweida said.

"We are out to 1200m with her as well and I hope she can settle a little bit closer, even though her barrier of eight is no help."

Schweida said it was unusual for Miss Cover Girl to begin slowly.

"It was just one of those things and hopefully she will be in striking distance on Saturday," he said.

Schweida hasn't ruled out taking Miss Cover Girl to Sydney or Melbourne but says the local prize money and QTIS scheme are also attractive.

He confirmed What About Me was likely to back up and would be suited by a weight drop.

What About Me is owned by Schweida's daughter Jody and is on the comeback trail after a serious paddock injury nearly ended his career.
