Racing industry to farewell fallen jockeys

Tuesday 21 October 2014, 5:11pm

Family, friends, jockeys and punters will remember two fallen jockeys at their funerals this week.

Queensland rider Carly-Mae Pye, 26, died last Tuesday from injuries she suffered in a trackwork fall in Rockhampton.

South Australian apprentice Caitlin Forrest, 19, died in hospital last Thursday after a four-horse fall at Murray Bridge a day earlier.

Pye's funeral will be held on Wednesday at Callaghan Park Racecourse in Rockhampton at 2pm.

Forrest's funeral will be held the following day at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide at 1.30pm.

"Members of the public are welcome to attend and are encouraged to wear blue, Caitlin's favourite colour," Thoroughbred Racing South Australia said in a statement.

Jockeys in Melbourne and South Australia wore blue armbands at race meetings at the weekend to honour the apprentice.

Tracy O'Hara paid tribute to close friend Pye by donning her racing colours for the Carly-Mae Pye Memorial race in Rockhampton last Saturday.

O'Hara rode Zaha Express, Pye's last winner who is trained by her partner Tim Cook.

Zaha Express was the sentimental favourite but finished sixth at the Caulfield Cup Day at Callaghan Park.

The racing world was also rocked by the death of American apprentice Juan Saez, who lost his life in a fall in Indiana last week.
