Avoid Lightning strikes again at Randwick

Saturday 18 October 2014, 6:10pm

It's unlikely Les Bridge will ever train a better mare than Hot Danish but Avoid Lightning is building her own reputation in his stable.

The former Adelaide-trained Avoid Lightning posted her fifth win from seven starts for Bridge when she stormed home in the Group Three Nivison (1200m) at Randwick.

Hot Danish was a multiple Group One winner and Avoid Lightning has a Group One placing in the Tatts Tiara on her record.

"She is a very, very good mare," Bridge said.

"I don't think there were any thoughts of sending her to stud this spring. Even though she is now a six-year-old she is getting better."

Sent out the $2.20 favourite, Avoid Lightning beat Brook Road ($9) by a short neck with Rose Of Choice ($10) a half neck third.

The track was just into Avoid Lightning's preferred range of dead or worse and Bridge said future spring plans depended on the weather.

"If it happened to rain in Melbourne I would take her for something down there," he said.

"I can have her on a float and in Melbourne in 12 hours.

"The wetter the track is the better for her and it slows the others down."

Tim Clark, who had a long association with Hot Danish, said he held Avoid Lightning up to make her run.

"She probably can't sustain it for too long," he said.

"She put in a good sprint for 250 metres. I was mindful she was first-up over 1200 metres as well today.

"She is very brave."
