Northern Zoom to be kept to sprints

Wednesday 15 October 2014, 5:14pm

Trainer Trevor Bailey will keep class mare Northern Zoom to sprint races after her barnstorming win on Wednesday.

Northern Zoom ($3.20) came from near the tail of the field and was too strong for a handy field in the Class Three Hcp (1200m) at Ipswich.

The mare, who is by the late Northern Meteor, cost $50,000 as a yearling but Bailey believes he could have a cheap buy in the long term.

"We got her out to 1800 metres after she ran fourth in a good standard three-year-old race at the start of the winter carnival. It was too far for her and we will be keeping her to races around the 1400 metre mark now," Bailey said.

Northern Zoom won her first run back from a spell at the Gold Coast in mid September and Bailey kept her up to the mark with a trial behind top galloper Rudy two weeks ago.

Bailey said the stable had not wanted to start Northern Zoom again after her first-up win until they secured her half sister by Tale of the Cat from the recent Patinack dispersal sale.

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan continued to cement his relationship with top breeding groups when Ten Speed scored an eye-catching win in the Three Year old Plate (1200m).

Gollan has been successful for several of Australia's leading stud operations in recent months and Ten Speed is one of several horses he trains for Glenlogan Park.

Ten Speed ($2.30) came from six lengths off the lead coming to the home turn to win impressively.
