The withdrawal of My Ambivalent from the Caulfield Cup has paved the way for Lidari to gain a start.

But trainer Peter Moody's other Cup hopeful Brambles will need a scratching if he is to also run in the $3 million race.

English mare My Ambivalent was ruled out of Saturday's Caulfield Cup on Tuesday because of bruising on a hoof, leaving the Moody-trained Lidari to snare a place in the 18-horse field.

Stablemate Brambles heads the list of four emergencies.

Moody believes both his entries are going well enough to "shake the life out of the race".

Luke Nolen will ride Lidari at 53.5kg if there are no scratchings but should Brambles gain a start he will partner that horse with Ben Melham on stand by to ride Lidari.

Lidari and Brambles finished second and third respectively last start in the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington won by Caulfield Cup favourite Lucia Valentina.

"They are both in very good form," Moody said of his pair at trackwork on Tuesday.

"I'm really looking forward to getting Lidari into a handicap.

"He looks ideally suited under those conditions and he was super the other day in the Turnbull."

Moody has primarily started Lidari in weight-for-age races since he arrived in Australia.

Six-year-old Lidari won two Listed races over the Caulfield Cup distance in 2012 in France.

"His best form in France was at a mile and a half (2400m) and we've never run him over that distance," Moody said.

"His run at a mile and a quarter (2000m) was very strong through the line the other day in the Turnbull."

The 2012 Queensland Derby winner Brambles has the same weight as his stablemate and has been working his way back to top form after spending close to two years on the sidelines.

"Brambles is equally as well (as Lidari). He has come on nicely and probably peaked on his run the other day which probably just cost him victory," Moody said.
