Picavino set to end Kemp's frustrating run

Friday 10 October 2014, 12:27pm

Promising two-year-old filly Picavino is set to end a run of bad luck for trainer Kevin Kemp.

Picavino will be having her second race start when she tackles the Tacoma Plumbing Handicap (1050m) at Doomben on Saturday.

At her first run she was flattened at the start but came from second last to run fourth behind the early-season's top filly Syn City in the Hopeful Stakes at Toowoomba.

Kemp had been toying with running Picavino at Toowoomba again but he has elected to chase metropolitan prize money.

"She has drawn barrier two and we have Jim Byrne to ride," Kemp said.

"She got poleaxed at her only start and her effort to run fourth was outstanding.

"She showed pace in her trial when she won and I would expect her to be much closer to the lead on Saturday."

Picavino is raced by a syndicate headed by prominent Queensland breeder and owner Mary Lee Trivett who stands the filly's sire Seidnazar at Banchory Stud on the Darling Downs.

Seidnazar, who ran second in the 2005 Blue Diamond Stakes behind Undoubtedly, has produced a steady stream of winners.

Kemp has taken his recent run of bad luck in his usual laidback manner.

"It would be fair to say we have had five runners in metropolitan races of late who have been unlucky," he said.

"But as I keep saying, we come down to Brisbane to get beaten around the head and then slink back to Toowoomba to get the crumbs.

"Hopefully, all that will change on Saturday."
