Clarry Conners back on track for Dear Demi

Thursday 9 October 2014, 5:57pm

Clarry Conners was forced to miss Dear Demi's last-start win in Melbourne but can't wait to be trackside to see his stable star tackle a stellar field in the Caulfield Stakes.

Conners suffered facial injuries when he was kicked by a horse at Hawkesbury racecourse two weeks ago.

He was unable to be at Moonee Valley the next day for Dear Demi's Stocks Stakes win.

The trainer says his injuries are healing well but is still not allowed to fly and has to venture to Melbourne by car on Friday ahead of Dear Demi's Caulfield Stakes mission on Saturday.

"All the reports are good with the mare and I'm anxious to get down there," he said.

Conners has planned for Dear Demi to back up in the $3 million Caulfield Cup on Saturday week after she runs in the weight-for-age Caulfield Stakes where her opposition includes the top four in Cox Plate betting.

"It's a hard race but I'm happy with the mare. Her work has been fine. This run will top her right off," Conners said.

"The weight-for-age scale doesn't suit her a lot, the handicap of the Caulfield Cup is better for her, but she's going to run very well because I'm happy with the horse.

"But whatever she does is just going to improve her two or three lengths, I'm sure."

Conners is adamant Dear Demi is going better than ever this campaign and that was reinforced by her Stocks Stakes win over Solicit and Commanding Jewel which was the first time she had won third-up.

"She had little things against her and came through with flying colours," Conners said.

"We've planned what we are going to do with her, make the Caulfield Cup her fifth start and everything so far is going to plan."

Conners suffered small fractures to his eye socket, bruising to his jaw, cut his lip which required stitches and lost four teeth in the mounting yard incident.

He also injured his ribs when he fell to the ground.
