Globetrotting jockey Joao Moreira wasted little time making an impact on Epsom Handicap day at Randwick with a stakes victory aboard Hampton Court at just his second ride.
It wasn't Moreira's prettiest effort but the Hong Kong premiership leader got the job done, urging Hampton Court through a split late in the straight to gather in stablemate Duccio and claim the Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) by three quarters of a length.
He said the horse had a tendency to lose concentration but switched on when it mattered.
"I probably didn't give him the best of rides and he was still able to get there," Moreira said.
"Six hundred metres to the post he came off the bridle, I wasn't able to push the horse that was on my outside out and get a run early, but when the gap came up he was too strong to the line.
"The longer trip he goes (over) the better he will be."
Hampton Court will get that distance rise as soon as next Saturday with Waterhouse confirming he will back up in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
He is also entered for the Victoria Derby.
"I always said I thought he was a superior stayer but we haven't had the right distance," Waterhouse said.
Moreira brought up a race-to-race feature double when he claimed the Roman Consul Stakes aboard the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau.
