Kuro continues rise in Heritage Stakes

Saturday 20 September 2014, 2:58pm

Kuro has already answered one challenge this campaign and Joe Pride is in two minds about whether to set the colt another.

The three-year-old made light work of a steep rise in class when he added to successive victories in midweek grade with a win in the Listed Heritage Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Pride now needs to decide whether to target another feature race in Sydney or Melbourne, or send the horse for a break.

"It was a big test for him today but he's come through it with flying colours," Pride said.

"We'll give consideration about what we do with him now, possibly a trip to Melbourne. But he's only going to be better in the autumn so we might put him aside.

"He's had two runs on heavy tracks and today he's run really good time on a firmer track. There's a bottom on these horses and I don't want to hit it."

The heavily backed Kuro ran a race record 1min02.37secs for the 1100m, expanding on his narrow early lead to run out a 1-3/4 length winner over Echo Gal with Klammer third.

It was less than a second outside the track record, which would have given Pride another short-course mark at Randwick as he trained 1000-metre track-record holder De Lightning Ridge and 1200m benchmark horse That's A Good Idea.
