Fine Bubbles proved her trainer Kris Lees wrong in the best possible way when she claimed an important win in the $125,000 Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle on Thursday.

One of three runners Lees saddled up in the Group Three race for fillies and mares, Fine Bubbles earned herself a start in something better after Lees thought she might be short of being a stakes-class horse.

"I sent her up to Brisbane thinking she was not quite up to the better mares in Sydney," Lees said.

"Well, she's made a bit of a mockery of that now."

Confirming she can hold her form a long way into a preparation, Fine Bubbles ($12) scored a clear-cut win from I'm In The Money ($6) with stablemate Gold Epona ($21) finishing in the placings for the second year by taking third.

James McDonald had Fine Bubbles midfield from a deep draw and he produced her in the centre of the track in the straight to put the result beyond doubt at the 200m.

Lees saw enough merit in the win to consider giving Fine Bubbles her chance in the $300,000 Golden Pendant at Rosehill on Saturday week despite the likely presence of Chris Waller's star mare Catkins.

"She wouldn't beat Catkins but it would give her a chance to earn some decent prize money," Lees said.
