Guineas hopefuls to clash at Flemington

Monday 8 September 2014, 5:45pm

Two colts at the head of betting for the Caulfield Guineas are set to clash for the first time in an intriguing Listed race at Flemington.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Chivalry rocketed into clear-cut Guineas favouritism with his first-up win in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield when he powered home from the tail of the field.

The win prompted jockey Glen Boss to declare Chivalry the best colt in Victoria.

The son of Street Cry is among 23 nominations for Saturday's Listed Henry Bucks at Flemington where his opposition is likely to include another boom colt, Divan.

Chivalry is at $5 in Guineas betting while Divan shares the second line at $12 with Group One winner Almalad who runs in Saturday's Golden Rose in Sydney and Get The Nod who lines up in the Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

Divan raced keenly in the second half of the field and overcame a slow pace to win a maiden at Sandown late last month.

The Henry Bucks (1400m) was won last year by subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Long John.

Other horses reasonably high in Guineas markets nominated for the Flemington race include Zebulon who is at $16 for the Guineas.

Better Land is also at $16 and is entered for Flemington but will run in the Golden Rose if he gains a start in the $1 million race.

David Hayes, who trains in partnership with Tom Dabernig, will start Zululand in the Henry Bucks and believes he can make his presence felt stepping up in distance and getting to Flemington.

Zululand, who is at $26 in the Guineas market, won the Group Two VRC Sires' Produce Stakes over the course and distance in the autumn.

The colt was a closing fifth in the Vain Stakes (1100m) and was beaten four lengths when seventh behind Chivalry.

Hayes said Zululand jumped a bit slowly in the McNeil after the start had been delayed and switched off at the back of the field with Chivalry, but he was happy with the way he worked to the line late.

"If it's dry I would be pretty confident he'll be in the finish," Hayes said.

Craig Williams has the ride on Zululand.
