Speediness will chase back-to-back wins in the Bobbie Lewis Quality at Flemington, beginning a campaign trainer Colin Scott hopes can reap an overdue Group One.

Seven-year-old Speediness has not won since his first-up success in the Group Three sprint a year ago.

In the past 12 months, the gelding has been placed in two Group Ones, been luckless in a couple of other top races and finished runner-up twice at Group Two level.

Scott is convinced Speediness has retained his zest for racing and is optimistic about his spring prospects.

"At the moment he gives me every indication he has returned equally as well what he was in the autumn," Scott said.

"His two trials (jump-outs) going into this have both been excellent."

Craig Williams, who rode Speediness to victory last year, reunites with the gelding on Saturday.

Williams also rode Speediness when he was a luckless fourth in the Rupert Clarke Stakes, and when he finished second in the Crystal Mile and third in the Emirates Stakes last spring.

"Craig trialled him on Tuesday and was very happy with him and happy to ride him," Scott said.

Williams was aboard Irish visitor Gordon Lord Byron who flashed home to deny Speediness a Group One in the George Ryder Stakes in the autumn.

Scott admitted he, like many people, thought Speediness was home with 50 metres to run.

"That's unfortunate but at the same time if you look at the quality horses that were behind him, he beat a lot of topliners home," Scott said.

"He did an exceptional job that day but just unfortunately got beaten.

"Hopefully he can have his day this spring."

Speediness and Queenslander Temple Of Boom head the 33 nominations for the Bobbie Lewis (1200m) with equal top rating of 109.

Other entries include Group winners Sistine Demon, Flamberge and Charlie Boy and talented New Zealander El Roca who was third in the George Ryder.

The plan is for Speediness to follow the same early spring path as last year in the Bobbie Lewis, Rupert Clarke Stakes and Toorak Handicap.

"Depending on how competitive he is in those races, we hold a nomination for the Cox Plate and we certainly wouldn't be afraid to go there if his form warranted it," Scott said.
