Gr2 Tramway Stakes goes to Lucia Valentina

Saturday 6 September 2014, 5:27pm

A wet track stopped Kris Lees running Lucia Valentina two weeks ago but the trainer bit the bullet on Saturday and was rewarded with the mare's Tramway Stakes win.

The winner of the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes in the autumn, Lucia Valentina showed she had made the step to open age racing when she mowed down wet-track specialist Tiger Tees at Randwick.

Randwick was downgraded after rain on Saturday morning but Lees' fears Lucia Valentina ($9) would not handle it were put to rest in a few strides when she surged 1-1/2 lengths clear of Tiger Tees ($4).

"We scratched her the other day because we were worried about the wet track first-up, but we had to get her to the races to get her program going," Lees said.

"She has matured a lot and I think the penny has dropped.

"It was really pleasing to see what she did today."

Toydini ($16) finished a long neck behind Tiger Tees at his first start for the Hawkes team who took him over following the sudden death of trainer Guy Walter in May.

Australian Oaks winner Rising Romance also put in an eye-catching run to be in a photo for third with Toydini.

Lees said the weight-for-age George Main Stakes (1600m) in two weeks was the logical progression for Lucia Valentina with Toydini and Rising Romance also headed in that direction.

"After the George Main she will go to Melbourne for the Turnbull Stakes and that will decide whether we head to the Caulfield Cup or the Cox Plate," Lees said.

The win was a pleasing result for jockey Kerrin McEvoy after Earthquake failed to handle the heavy track when third in the Furious Stakes and Royal Descent was nosed out of the Chelmsford by stablemate Hawkspur.

"Lucky it is raining as she was on fire in the last 400 metres," McEvoy said.

"That was a good first-up run after her break."

"About the 600 metres she took a bad step in a bad portion of the track and I was a bit worried after that but she was able to rally and balance."

The disappointment of the race was the $3.80 favourite Weary who finished last of the 12 runners.
