Winks and Prince reunite at Valley

Friday 5 September 2014, 1:50pm

James Winks is out to maintain his unbeaten record on Our Voodoo Prince when the pair reunite at Moonee Valley and expects the gelding's ability to offset his big weight.

Winks won all three races on Our Voodoo Prince in the import's first Australian campaign, culminating in an impressive Easter Cup victory at Caulfield in April.

Out of champion European mare Ouija Board and a half-brother to the Aidan O'Brien-trained star colt Australia, Our Voodoo Prince finished at the tail of the field first-up in the Show County Quality (1200m) in Sydney on a heavy track.

He returns to Melbourne for Saturday's Sportingbet Handicap (1600m) where he has top weight of 60kg.

"It's not going to be an easy task with 60 kilos and by all reports he's still a little bit fat but he's a quality animal," Winks said.

"And if he's going to be a Caulfield Cup contender you'd hope he'd be able to win that race, or be very close to them."

Winks said Our Voodoo Prince was very impressive last preparation to stamp himself a potential Caulfield Cup horse and the jockey is happy to overlook his first-up run on the rain-sodden ground over an unsuitable distance.

"A horse of his ability, I hold him in high regard, I wouldn't be surprised if he came out and beat them. And if he did that would be great," Winks said.

Trainer Chris Waller is keen to get Winks' assessment of the seven-year-old on Saturday.

"I think that's an important booking, just to get a line on where we are at with the horse," Waller said.

"He doesn't show us a lot at home, which was the same last preparation as well.

"He has a big weight and is still a bit big in condition, but he needs to still show us something on Saturday."
