Brad Stewart rides Sunshine Coast double

Wednesday 3 September 2014, 4:26pm

Jockey Brad Stewart showed plenty of courage when he scored a shock win on outsider Hazard Bay at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday.

Stewart was the punters' hero when he won on plunge horse Vintage Bon but Hazard Bay ($31) was friendless in the betting ring before strolling home by three lengths in the Wimmers Premium Softdrinks Handicap (1200m).

First-starter Hazard Bay was in a playful mood on the way to the barriers and threw Stewart before cantering down the track.

Hazard Bay was having his first start for Brisbane Race Club chairman Neville Bell who bred the gelding at his Kilto Park Stud complex, at Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

Bell, who has many of his horses with Caloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick, stood Hazard Bay's sire Ombra Della Sera and also owns the gelding's dam Babinda Belle.

Ombra Della Sera was a top sprinter whose best win was in the Caloundra City Cup while Babinda Belle won five races in north Queensland.

Promising mare Sea Red ($3.20) made a brilliant return when she came from second last to easily win the Coca Cola Amatil Plate (1400m).

Trainer Robert Heathcote thought Sea Red would be a Queensland Oaks chance in the winter but she had a lot of bad luck in her races.

"I have a lot of time for her and I think she is a possible top-class mare," Heathcote said.

Sea Red was ridden by apprentice Bridget Grylls who has a six-meeting suspension from last Saturday hanging over her head.

Heathcote thanked apprentice Luke Tarrant for the win of track specialist Thirty For Blood ($3.30) in the XXXX Class 5 Handicap (1600m).

Thirsty For Blood missed the start by two lengths but when the pace slackened Tarrant whipped around the field to lead into the straight.

"That was a clever ride and Luke really is maturing," said winning trainer Rob Heathcote.
