Brazen Beau to miss $1 million Golden Rose

Tuesday 2 September 2014, 3:47pm

Brazen Beau, one of the early favourites for the Golden Rose, has been ruled out of the $1 million race.

And instead of making a belated return to racing in Sydney, trainer Chris Waller confirmed the Group One-placed colt would head to Melbourne to open his spring campaign.

Waller made a Golden Rose call on Brazen Beau on Tuesday despite the three-year-old winning a barrier trial at Rosehill.

Brazen Beau defeated city winners Bugatty and Press Report in the heat but the win was not enough to convince Waller he would cope with a 1400-metre return against Group One opposition in the Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 13.

Waller said Brazen Beau would resume over 1200m in the Danehill Stakes at Flemington on the same day.

"A decision regarding the follow-on races will be made after his first-up run," Waller said.

Brazen Beau accepted for the Run To The Rose at Rosehill on Saturday but he was scratched from the vital Golden Rose lead-up race because of a heavy track.

Brazen Beau was regarded as one of Waller's better chances in the trainer's bid for back-to-back Golden Rose wins.

He campaigned strongly during the Queensland winter carnival, ending his preparation when runner-up in the Group One JJ Atkins Stakes.

Golden Rose betting was tipped upside down after the Run To The Rose following the defeats of Almalad and Nostradamus.

Unbeaten in three starts going into the Group Three race, Almalad laboured under his 60kg on the rain-affected track and finished ninth of the 10 runners.

He had been favourite since the release of Golden Rose markets but bookmakers have eased him to a double-figure quote.

Run To The Rose winner Hallowed Crown is the new favourite from Melbourne filly Bring Me The Maid.
