Goulburn club to honour trainer Guy Walter

Monday 1 September 2014, 6:09pm

A plaque honouring late trainer Guy Walter will be unveiled at Goulburn this week while a race bearing his name will be held on Cup day.

Walter, who died suddenly in May, ran stables at both Warwick Farm and Goulburn.

The $30,000 fillies and mares' race on November 23 will be known as the Emirates Park Guy Walter Handicap and carry a service to stallion Al Maher as part of the winner's prize.

Goulburn Race Club president Fred Cooper said Walter had been an integral part of the club's success, winning the trainers' premiership from 2004 to 2014 and five Goulburn Cups.

"Guy had stables on track for seven years and had built a home on land adjoining and overlooking the racetrack," Cooper said.

Cooper said the club would be forever indebted to Walter for his support and counsel over many years and would work towards lifting the profile and status of the race in the future.

The club has also planted a tree near the race day stalls in Walter's memory and his widow Wendy will unveil the plaque on Thursday.

The Australian Turf Club will rename the Group Three Wiggle Stakes in Walter's Memory with the race part of Warwick Farm's premier meeting in autumn.
