Eloping to face Lankan Rupee in G2 sprint

Monday 1 September 2014, 5:50pm

Eloping faces a formidable task in her return to racing but trainer Peter Morgan is happy to give the filly her chance in the McEwen Stakes.

The three-year-old is nominated for two Moonee Valley races on Saturday but will take her place in the Group Two McEwen (1000m) against a field which includes star sprinter Lankan Rupee.

Linda Meech has been booked for the ride, with Eloping to carry 50kg under the weight-for-age conditions.

Eloping won a Listed and Group Three race during her juvenile season and the McEwen is a chance to boost her future broodmare value if she manages to win or run a place against the older horses.

"I know there's going to be a couple of hard horses to beat but even if we get second place we'll be happy," Morgan, who trains in partnership with Craig Widdison, said.

"She will only have 50 kilos and we just hope she can run a good race and run a place, which I think she probably can."

Morgan said Eloping was still carrying a winter coat but appeared to be coming along nicely after a recent barrier trial win at Cranbourne on heavy ground.

Entries for the McEwen have been extended until Tuesday after 13 nominations were received.

Lankan Rupee, who is the top-ranked sprinter in the world so far this year after Group One autumn wins in the Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Handicap and TJ Smith Stakes, will be stepping out for his first race of the spring.

He is 14 rating points above his nearest rival in Saturday's nominations.

Trainer Nikki Burke has nominated Group Two winner Unpretentious while Godolphin has entered Sessions and three-year-old Orujo.

Unpretentious was a close third to Spirit Of Boom and Fontelina in the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley over 1200m in March.

Eloping will gallop at Moonee Valley on Tuesday, as will the Mick Price-trained Lankan Rupee.

Meanwhile, Morgan was thrilled with Caulfield Guineas hopeful Zebulon who won an 800m barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday ahead of his return in the Listed Henry Bucks Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday week.

"It was a pretty impressive trial," Morgan said.
