Gatewood sets up return to Australia

Monday 1 September 2014, 1:04pm

Gatewood has set himself up for a return to Australia with a game second in the Group Three Lucien Barriere at Deauville.

The 2012 Geelong Cup winner was narrowly beaten by Cocktail Queen in a tight finish.

Part-owners OTI Racing said he would now head to the Melbourne Cup as long as he recovered well from the race.

Gatewood began his career with John Gosden and had a stint with Chris Waller in Australia after he failed to make the 2012 Melbourne Cup field.

He rejoined Gosden last year and has recaptured his form this season.

Nominations for the Melbourne Cup close on Tuesday.
