Sistine Demon building up for shot at G1

Sunday 31 August 2014, 4:37pm

Sistine Demon made a name for himself with seven wins last season and his trainer Andrew Noblet is hoping he can make the step up to Group One contender this spring.

Sistine Demon will ramp up his spring carnival preparations in a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday with suspended jockey Chad Schofield aboard.

Schofield is booked to ride Sistine Demon first-up in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 13, the day the young jockey returns from a careless riding ban.

Sistine Demon progressed from winning a benchmark 64 at Donald last November to adding another six wins from his next seven starts.

They included a Listed win at Flemington over 1400m and a six-length victory in the Group Three Victoria Handicap before he failed in the Group One Goodwood in Adelaide.

His dominant Victoria Handicap win in April came over the 1400m at Caulfield, the same course and distance as the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on September 28.

"We want to give him a go in the Rupert Clarke, so if all is well that's where he will go second-up," Noblet said.

Sistine Demon spent five weeks in the paddock after the Goodwood followed by a couple of weeks working on a water walker before returning to Noblet's Caulfield stables.

"He looks a treat and is working well," Noblet said.

The trainer expects to get a better guide on how Sistine Demon has come back in his first-up run.

"His only run up the straight was a bit disappointing as a younger horse, but he's gone ahead since then," he said.

"Hopefully he can put in a nice run there and then head to Caulfield where he seems to really enjoy it."
