Lankan Rupee to step out at Moonee Valley

Sunday 31 August 2014, 3:55pm

Star sprinter Lankan Rupee and Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer will be the main attractions at the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes meeting at Moonee Valley.

The Mick Price-trained Lankan Rupee kicks off his highly anticipated spring campaign in Saturday's Group Two McEwen Stakes (1000m).

He will then step up to Group One level with in the Moir Stakes, Manikato Stakes, Darley Classic and Hong Kong International Sprint.

The five-year-old will have his final serious gallop on Tuesday at Moonee Valley to tune him up for his return.

"He'll have a good hit-out and he'll be ready to rock and roll," jockey Craig Newitt said.

"I'm looking forward to his return. He is going well."

Lankan Rupee will work with stablemate Lion Of Belfort and trainer Mick Price expects the excursion to be valuable for the triple Group One winner.

"He can get on the float and get a bit excited and have a good gallop," Price said.

The brilliant sprinter is looking to continue his unbeaten run in 2014 after wins in the Group Two Rubiton Stakes and Group One Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Handicap and TJ Smith Stakes.

Lankan Rupee's spring build-up has included a second in an easy barrier trial at Cranbourne on heavy ground and a win in a jump-out in the fog at Caulfield last Tuesday which delighted his jockey.

"I gave him a backhander just to wake him up and get him rolling, and he trialled great," Newitt said.

The McEwen Stakes is one of two Group Two races on Saturday's Moonee Valley card with the feature the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

Melbourne Cup favourite and Caulfield Cup joint-favourite The Offer is due to start his campaign in the 1600m weight-for-age race.

The Offer's trainer Gai Waterhouse won the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes last year with subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente.

PB Lawrence Stakes winner Star Rolling is also expected to line up in the Dato Tan while David Hayes and Tom Dabernig will start import Crackerjack King.
