Hallowed Crown stakes Golden Rose claims

Saturday 30 August 2014, 5:05pm

Bart Cummings is primed to fill in a Group One gap with Hallowed Crown stamping his class in a lead-up race to the $1 million Golden Rose.

Now in a training partnership with his grandson James, Cummings has a resume the envy of every other trainer and Hallowed Crown could be his next star.

The colt produced a sizzling final 200m in Saturday's Group Three Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill to assume favouritism for the Golden Rose in two weeks.

Confidently ridden by Josh Parr, Hallowed Crown ($7) had three-quarters of a length on Kumaon ($14) with Ygritte ($11), another half length third and the only on-pace runner to maintain her spot.

Hallowed Crown is a Cummings family affair as he is raced by Eduardo Cojuangco, the grandfather of James' wife Monica.

"I am sure he will be the horse to beat in the Golden Rose," James Cummings said.

"He is a cool customer and takes everything in his stride.

"No horse in the stable can raise the bar to him.

"He is unbeaten and it's very exciting."

Hallowed Crown raced twice as a two-year-old, both times on rain-affected tracks, but Cummings said he was sure he could be just as effective on top of the ground.

"Only time will tell but he's worked well on good track," he said.

"He is very sensible. He has a great brain for racing and seems to be able to do anything."

Parr had a broad smile when he came back to scale.

"He did it really easily," he said.

"He put paid to them in a few strides."

Favourite Nostradamus ($3) and Almalad ($4.80) finished seventh and ninth respectively after being up on the speed.

Hallowed Crown was immediately promoted to the top of Golden Rose markets, firming from $11 to $4.60 with Bring Me The Maid now at $6.

Trainer Gerald Ryan said he would not make an immediate decision on a Golden Rose start for Ygritte, the only filly in Saturday's field.

"At the moment I think that's where she will go but we don't have to decide until Tuesday week," Ryan said.

"Obviously there's a question over the 1400 metres but that's the same for a lot of them.

"I'm really proud of how she went and stuck on."
