Apprentices to the fore in Schweida double

Saturday 30 August 2014, 4:25pm

Trainer Kelly Schweida praised the depth of apprentice riders in Brisbane after competing a double with Bingo Rose and Epic at Doomben on Saturday.

Apprentice Luke Tarrant, who is the co-leader in the Brisbane jockeys' premiership, was seen at his best to win on Epic ($7) in the Courier Mail Taste Handicap (1600m).

Epic had been a dismal failure at his previous start when second last at Eagle Farm over 1600m.

"But he had been so consistent in his career. You have to forgive them one bad run," Schweida said.

"Luke handled him exactly the way we wanted getting into a good position behind the pace.

"He is one of several top-class apprentices we have here at the moment."

Schweida was equally complimentary of apprentice Bridget Grylls who rode Bingo Rose to win the Martin Hellyer Retirement Handicap (1600m).

"Bridget is riding a lot of winners here and her three-kilo claim here is a big plus," he said.

"I have had Bingo Rose for only five runs and there was some doubt about her running a strong 1600 metres."

"But I had a look at her early form and she had been competitive at 1500 metres so I thought she was ready for the trip."

Bingo Rose ($7) returned the faith by winning the race by 5-3/4 lengths.

Earlier trainer Brian Smith also praised apprentice Sam Payne after his Sydney-bound gelding Jetset Lad ($3.40) scored an impressive win in the Sono Restaurant Handicap (1350m).

Jetset Lad, who is being set for Cameron Handicap at Newcastle and the Epsom Epsom Handicap, hadn't started since winning the Tatts Mile on July 12.

Meanwhile, trainer Toby Edmonds continued his great association with the famous Segenhoe Stud when Our Boy Nicholas won the Queensland Reef and Beef Handicap (1350m).

Edmonds was in Scone on Saturday but his son Trent Edmonds said the stable had trained 18 winners for Segenhoe in the past 12 months.
