Rugged Cross leads in Waller first four

Saturday 30 August 2014, 3:44pm

Training the first four in a race is nothing new to Chris Waller but it is always satisfying when it happens as it did at Rosehill on Saturday.

The premier trainer's biggest first four success came in the Group One Doncaster Mile but the TAB Quaddie Handicap (1500m) was no less important.

Rugged Cross ($5) overhauled Rowley Mile runner-up Tougher Than Ever ($4.40) with Eigelstein and Lucky Chappy the next two.

"It's important for my stable and important for the owners that we have won almost $100,000 from the race," Waller said.

"Rugged Cross ran last week at Moonee Valley but the track was too firm.

"The beauty of having stables in Melbourne and Sydney is that we were able to bring him home to run on the wet track.

"One or two of these horses will now probably head to the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle."

Maroon Bay, winner of the Cellarbrations Handicap (1100m) for the Hawkes family training team is also headed to the Hunter Valley, but not to race.

"She will be going to Vinery Stud on Monday to be served by More Than Ready," Michael Hawkes said.

"She is from a good family and having another win on her record will help."

Maroon Bay is a half-sister to Jolie Bay, runner-up in the 2012 Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Like Jolie Bay, she is out of Legally Bay with both those horses trained by Michael's father John Hawkes.
