Waller commits Beau to Rosehill return

Wednesday 27 August 2014, 4:07pm

Chris Waller concedes he has no alternative but to run wet-track risk Brazen Beau when the leading Golden Rose contender makes his return to racing on Saturday.

Brazen Beau, Group One-placed in the J J Atkins Stakes, steps out for the first time since the Brisbane winter carnival when he contests the $125,000 Run To The Rose at Rosehill.

But with the meeting almost certain to go ahead on a rain-affected track, Waller said Brazen Beau would be resuming in less-than-ideal conditions.

Waller got a first-hand look at the Rosehill surface on Wednesday morning and expects safe racing but he doubts soggy ground will help Brazen Beau.

"I'm desperately hoping we get fine weather on Thursday and Friday," Waller said.

"As long as the track is holding together and the horses can get some footing it won't be too bad."

Whether the state of the track is good enough for Brazen Beau to show his best on Saturday is debatable, according to Waller,

"He didn't handle a slow track at his second start and he finished out of a place," Waller said.

"And even in his trial last Saturday (jockey) Hugh Bowman said 'only fair' so if he's showing those signs in a trial it's normally exaggerated in a race."

Waller, who also has Law and Sniper Fire down to run, said there were few other Golden Rose lead-up options for Brazen Beau.

"It's hard for horses to back up within a week after a first-up run and if you don't run this week then you are snookered," he said.

Australian Turf Club manager Lindsay Murphy said Rosehill had received 175mm of rain in the 10 days up to a track inspection on Wednesday morning.

"The forecast for the next couple of days is for the rain to ease to isolated showers," Murphy said.

Almalad, unbeaten in three starts including his Atkins defeat of Brazen Beau, will resume with 60kg from barrier five.

Nostradamus has an inside gate but the San Domenico winner has also accepted for the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield.

Godolphin has matched Waller's Run To The Rose representation with three acceptors - Ghibellines, Kumaon and Sarajevo.
