Our Voodoo Prince still on trial: Waller

Thursday 21 August 2014, 3:54pm

He's unbeaten in Australia and he is high up in Caulfield Cup betting but English import Our Voodoo Prince still has to convince trainer Chris Waller of his spring bona fides.

Our Voodoo Prince is the first foal of former champion European mare Ouija Board and on that part of his pedigree alone, he would be a horse of interest no matter where he raced in the world.

But his bloodlines have become even more important during the latest northern hemisphere summer with his three-year-old sibling Australia winning the Epsom Derby, the Irish Derby and Wednesday's Juddmonte International.

Australia's rise makes Our Voodoo Prince's resumption in the Show County Quality at Randwick on Saturday an even more anticipated one, according to Waller.

"There will be a lot of eyes on him but to me he is just a pretty standard horse who has a long way to go," Waller said.

Our Voodoo Prince was among Waller's 2013 UK package of tried horses and he has already repaid the trainer's judgment with three wins from as many starts during his only Australian campaign in Melbourne earlier this year.

The most important win of the hat-trick was in the Group Three Easter Cup and with it came expectation of a spring campaign aimed at the major Cups.

As such, he sits on the third line of Caulfield Cup betting as a $21 chance.

"Saturday will tell us a lot," Waller said. "If he could run a nice midfield race I'd be tickled pink."

Our Voodoo Prince takes on a field which is a mixture of sprinters and stayers running over 1200m with Joe Pride's Terravista the early favourite to resume on a winning note.
