McGuren form a boost for Thompson stable

Apprentice Matt McGuren continued his winning streak and helped trainer John Thompson cement a relationship with one of Australia's biggest syndicators at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

McGuren took his tally of winners to 10 in past month since relocating to Queensland when he scored a double on Thompson's The Deestructor ($3.30) and Kalandula ($2.80) for his master Bruce Hill.

Thompson is the No. 1 trainer for the Patinack Farm syndicate but is now taking outside horses such as The Deestructor.

A former NSW Northern Rivers rider, McGuren is keen to break into Brisbane racing before his apprenticeship ends in December.

The Deestructor is raced by a syndicate headed by Joe O'Neill's Prime Thoroughbreds and was having his first Brisbane start.

Brisbane stable foreman Glen Thompson said The Deestructor would win more races after a confidence booster on Wednesday.

"We have three horses in Brisbane for the owners and it is a good start for us with them," he said.

Kalandula had to survive a protest after Luke Tarrant on the runner-up Strutter claimed he had suffered interference at the 200m in the Powerade Handicap (1300m).

Stewards didn't take long to throw out the objection and fined Tarrant $200 for lodging a frivolous protest.

Trainer Ben Currie was worried the track may have dried out too much for Great Game ($3.30) before the favourite won the Food and Wine Handicap (1300m).

"He was originally trained by David Hayes in Victoria and had won on a heavy ten track. We thought the track may have been a bit wetter from Saturday and we were a bit worried when we saw how it had dried," Currie said.

Currie believes Great Game will win more than his share of races around the 1600-metre mark in Brisbane.

Leading trainer Tony Gollan warmed up for his annual southern spring campaign with a winning double through favourite Tear It Up ($1.90) and Bernitchy ($4.20).

He said a change of tactics to revert to leading had paved the way for Bernitchy's win.
