Jockeys remembered at Aust race meetings

Saturday 2 August 2014, 3:40pm

On a day to commemorate injured and fallen jockeys, special thoughts have gone out to Ray Silburn who is in intensive care in a Canberra hospital.

Silburn has suffered major health problems since becoming a quadriplegic after a fall at Canberra in February, 2005.

Paul Innes, president of the Australian Jockeys Association, said Silburn had undergone surgery in his latest battle.

"Ray is not well and is in the ICU at Calvary Hospital after having his appendix out and part his bowel removed," Innes said.

"Because of his injury, Ray has ongoing problems with his kidneys and stomach.

"Bob Prior, who is part of the chaplaincy program, has been visiting him and he will be in hospital for some time.

"He developed an infection and his temperature is still up.

"It is an ongoing battle for him."

Saturday was the 10th anniversary of National Jockeys Celebration Day around Australia, honouring jockeys and recognising those who have died or are in need.

The National Jockeys Trust supports jockeys and their families affected by death or injury.

A minute's silence was held at major race meetings around Australia on Saturday.

Unfortunately for Silburn, his marriage broke down in the wake of his accident and he was forced into a protracted court case to gain access to funds.
