Big boost to Qld racing incentive scheme

Friday 1 August 2014, 4:54pm

Details of a major boost to the state government-backed Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme will be announced on Saturday.

For a one-off registration as a yearling, QTIS horses race for bonus money on selected races throughout Queensland, currently around $8 million.

However, under the new scheme, at least an extra $5 million will be injected into QTIS pay-outs over the three years starting from August 1, 2015.

Queensland breeders will hold their annual general meeting at Eagle Farm on Saturday where the full details of the new-look scheme will be released.

A Racing Queensland spokesman said there would be an announcement on Saturday but said he could not confirm the details.

The QTIS races are traditionally the biggest fields and strongest races at all Queensland meetings.

Similar schemes operate around the country aimed at encouraging owners to race horses bred within their states.

On Friday, Racing Victoria announced an increase in the number of horses nominated for its VOBIS Gold incentive.

"We're delighted that VOBIS Gold nominations have risen again by 12 per cent this year which is another vote of confidence from owners and breeders in Victorian racing," RV chief executive Bernard Saundry said.

The VOBIS Gold scheme offers significant financial rewards to those who choose to breed, buy, own and race in Victoria.

The largest number of foals in Australia are born in NSW where the BOBS scheme offers cash or Double Up vouchers which can be used towards the purchase of BOBS-eligible horses.
