Butler pledges to win weight battle

Wednesday 30 July 2014, 2:09pm

Jockey Ashley Butler has committed to addressing his weight issues after producing a superb ride to win aboard Dunlap at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Butler gave Dunlap the run of the race behind the leader before getting a rails split in the straight to take out the Quest Breakfast Creek Plate (1400m).

It was Butler's second top ride in the space of three days as he was also at his best to score aboard Gojo Mimo at Caloundra on Sunday.

However, it was a different story on Saturday when Butler collapsed in the weighing room at Doomben and missed the winning ride on Harada Bay.

Dunlap's trainer John Meagher believes Butler, who has ridden 44 winners this season, has the potential to be one of Queensland's best jockeys if he can get his weight under control.

It's a problem Butler has already committed to fixing.

"I am determined to get it right. It is ridiculous at the moment", Butler said of his weight issues.

Dunlap's win also continued the Meagher training partnerships good run of form, taking them to 16 wins and equal tenth on the Brisbane trainers' premiership.

Meanwhile, jockey Tim Bell gave himself a two-win lead in the jockeys' title race when he scored on Colour Me Pretty in the Mount Franklin Sparkling Plate (1400m).

Trainer Matt Dunn said Colour Me Pretty would make a nice middle distance horse later in her career.

"She nearly fell at the start at her only other run and she deserved better luck today," Dunn said.
