Achievements poised for Brisbane return

Wednesday 30 July 2014, 12:13pm

Tough galloper Achievements has recovered from a virus and earned himself another crack at metropolitan racing at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Achievements will be having his first start in Brisbane since January when he tackles the Desleigh Forster Racing Open Handicap (1400m).

The six-year-old has been in largely consistent form since he joined trainer Darryl Hansen's Caloundra stable in 2012 but he put in a below-par run three starts ago when ninth in the Rockhampton Newmarket.

"I had him set for the Newmarket and we were initially disappointed but we had him checked and he was suffering from a virus," Hansen said.

Achievements took a week to recover and the setback cost him berths in the Mackay Newmarket and Townsville Cleveland Bay Handicap.

Instead, Achievements has had two subsequent starts at the Sunshine Coast running second to Rock Home Late before winning a Benchmark 85 event two weeks ago.

"It was a good win and indicated he had earned a chance in the city again," Hansen said.

"He is right down in the weights and drops five kilos on his last-start win.

"Achievements likes Eagle Farm and has won three races there. We will keep poking around in town now because the standard tends to drop away after the winter."

Top jockey Michael Cahill will ride Achievements, taking over from Damian Browne who is on holidays.

"Michael rode him when he won at Eagle Farm earlier this year and he knows the horse," Hansen said.

Achievements is raced on lease by Hansen's wife Debbie and has been a great money-spinner for them.

The gelding has won over $200,000 prize money with close to $150,000 of that banked since he moved to Queensland following stints in Victoria and NSW.

Meanwhile, apprentice Luke Dittman will continue his association with trainer Ben Currie when he rides Rothera in the same race.

Dittman, who mainly rides in NSW, will also have the mount on Here's Roger for Currie in the Russ Maddock Memorial Hcp (1600m).
