Moloney set to make return to the saddle

Tuesday 29 July 2014, 3:35pm

Young jockey Patrick Moloney will have one goal when he resumes riding later this week.

Moloney has missed the past four months after breaking both ankles in a fall that also cost him the Melbourne apprentices' premiership.

Moloney rode 23 winners to lead the apprentices' title race until he crashed to the turf at Flemington on April 5 but the youngster is desperate to claim the crown in 2014-2015.

"The apprentices' title is definitely the goal for this season because I missed out last year," Moloney said.

Moloney will be available to resume riding at Geelong on Friday and will take any rides he can attract for Saturday's Moonee Valley meeting.

"I've got rides booked for Seymour so I'll be back then but I'll be trying to get rides booked for Friday at Geelong and Moonee Valley on Saturday," Moloney said.

The 19-year-old says watching Katelyn Mallyon and Jye McNeil fight out the apprentices' title motivated him to get back to the track ahead of schedule.

Moloney's enthusiastic approach to his rehabilitation and regaining his fitness has him ready to ride at 52kg whenever he gets the call from trainers.

"I couldn't have my body any better prepared for the races," Moloney said.

"I drove myself hard through the rehab and I'm back race riding two months ahead of what the doctors thought so pushing myself through rehab has really paid dividends."

Moloney's father, Caulfield trainer Gerard Moloney, has booked his son to ride Oriental Ruby at Moonee Valley on Saturday but the mare may not run.
