Carmody hoping for Everage start

Monday 28 July 2014, 5:08pm

Craig Carmody would like nothing more than for Everage to win for her new owner Gerry Harvey, but to do that she actually has to race.

The trainer has taken her to the track twice in recent weeks, and taken her home again without a start.

She took fright in the Randwick tunnel heading out for her race on June 21 and was scratched after dumping her rider Sam Clipperton. She got as far as the barriers next time but was again withdrawn after being unsettled by a horse in the adjacent stall.

Everage is entered for the 1100m benchmark 75 at Rosehill on Saturday for what will be one of her final starts before she heads to the breeding barn.

The winner of the 2013 Listed Keith Mackay Stakes for Carmody and other shareholders, Everage was sold to Harvey a couple of months ago as a broodmare prospect.

"She will be going to stud this season and it would nice for her to go out a winner," Carmody said.

"The first time she was scratched a lot of it was her fault but the second time was just bad luck.

"A horse next to her kicked the gate and she lunged and anticipated the start. I hope it works out better this time."

The other stakes winner in the Carmody stable, Single, failed to handle the deteriorating Kensington track on Saturday and could back up over 2000 metres at Rosehill.

"I will monitor him over the next couple of days and decide on Wednesday whether he runs," Carmody said.

After two thirds and a second at his previous three starts, Single ran sixth of seven over 1800 metres.

The feature race for the first Sydney meeting of the new season is the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) which attracted 12 entries on Monday, eight from the Chris Waller stable.

Nominations for the Winter Challenge have been extended until Tuesday morning.
