Thornton ride pivotal in Jemerica victory

Saturday 26 July 2014, 5:23pm

Apprentice Damien Thornton earned praise from trainer Mike Moroney for his initiative after Jemerica sprinted to an all-the-way win at Caulfield on Saturday.

Moroney said his instructions to Thornton were to go back on the filly in The Champagne Pommery Masters Handicap.

But after beginning quickly from the outside barrier, Thornton tossed his original plan out the window and allowed the filly to cross the field to take up the running.

After travelling kindly, Jemerica was never headed in 1200-metre race and had a 2-1/2 length advantage over her nearest rival Paddy's Gem.

"It was a great ride because only experienced riders do what he did," Moroney said.

"We told him to ride the horse back. But when she flew the gates he used his brain and did the right thing."

Moroney had scratched the filly from a race at the same track on Wednesday and it proved to be the right move.

And an endorsement of Jemerica's chances in the fillies' race came 35 minutes earlier when Adelaide filly Thiamandi sprinted to an upset victory in the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes.

Jemerica had finished second to Thiamandi at her most recent start.

Despite having some support after opening at $15, Jemerica still went around as a $12 chance.

Moroney is keen to win a stakes race with Jemerica and is convinced the filly has the talent to do so.

Next month's Group Three Cockram Stakes, a race Moroney won with Octavia last year, is in the trainer's sights with Jemerica.
