Baron Archer out to keep unbeaten record

Friday 25 July 2014, 5:06pm

Baron Archer is the biggest horse Jason Warren has trained.

And with two wins from as many starts, he is one of the most promising in the trainer's stable.

"We've actually never put the measuring stick on him, but he would be over 17 hands," Warren's assistant trainer Mitchell Beer said.

"He's certainly the biggest horse we've ever trained and Ben Melham said he's the biggest horse he's ever ridden."

Baron Archer, who is part-owned by AFL star Gary Ablett, has made an impression winning at Cranbourne on debut and then at Sandown.

He steps out for his biggest test yet in Saturday's Myrtle Lineham Centenary Plate (1400m) and is on the third line of TAB fixed odds betting at $4.40 after opening at $8.50.

"He's always shown us a fair bit, but being such a big horse we've just taken him along quite slowly," Beer said.

"To be fair, he has probably surprised us with how brilliant he has been in his first two starts but he has trained on fantastic since his last win."

Yesterday's Songs, a 5-1/2 length winner of a Sandown maiden six weeks ago, is the $3 favourite for Saturday's race ahead of last-start Listed winner Pyrrolic ($3.80).

Beer admitted the stable did not expect to strike a race late in the season with such depth but it will be a good test of the gelding's spring credentials.

"I think there's probably three horses in the race that you could genuinely say have spring aspirations," Beer said.

Trainer Mick Kent also believes he has struck a solid race with Pyrrolic but has an opinion of the colt who returned from a throat operation to win the Listed AR Creswick Series Final first-up two weeks ago.

"I like the horse a lot," Kent said.
