Saintly delivers win for newlywed Cummings

Wednesday 23 July 2014, 5:06pm

Fresh from celebrating his recent European wedding, James Cummings was straight back in the winner's circle at Canterbury on Wednesday with the talented but enigmatic Saintly Lad.

Cummings, who trains in partnership with his famous grandfather Bart, wed Gooree Stud's racing manager Monica Barrera in the Italian town of Ravello earlier this month.

The pair squeezed in a honeymoon in eastern Africa and Cummings said the win by Saintly Lad in the Ranvet Handicap (1550m) would help pay a few bills.

"I've got an extra mouth to feed now," Cummings said.

Saintly Lad has long shown ability but the three-year-old has only begun to deliver on it this campaign, winning two of his past three starts.

Cummings confirmed the stable would look to raise the bar for the horse now he had discovered some form and confidence.

"He's starting to show signs of a horse where the penny is really dropping," Cummings said.

"He looks like he is really starting to build on that promise."

Cummings is also looking forward to a fruitful spring with up-and-coming gallopers Hallowed Crown and Shamalia.

Norzita, on the comeback trail after injury ended her 2013 spring campaign, is also back in work with the Cox Plate pencilled in as a goal.

"She is just starting to get a little bit more serious," Cummings said.

"She is a run-by-run horse but she'll be nominated for the Cox Plate."
